The iconic Phillip Island MotoGP circuit's future is uncertain, with the current agreement between Dorna and the Victorian Government set to expire this year. This has sparked a debate about the potential loss of a MotoGP race in Australia, and the legendary rider Valentino Rossi has shared his thoughts on the matter.
A Piece of MotoGP History at Stake
Rossi, an eight-time winner at Phillip Island, emphasizes the track's significance. "Phillip Island is a piece of history for MotoGP," he says. With six premier class wins, including the thrilling 2001 race that clinched his first title, Rossi's connection to the circuit is undeniable.
But here's where it gets controversial: Dorna is reportedly considering a new direction, with Albert Park emerging as a potential alternative. The South Australian Government has also expressed interest, likely for a race at The Bend. And this is the part most people miss: there's a real possibility that Australia could lose its MotoGP race altogether.
Phillip Island has been the host of Australia's annual MotoGP round since 1997, and it was also the inaugural event location from 1989-90. Rossi describes it as a "fantastic track" and compares it to the iconic Bathurst circuit, known for its unique charm and challenges.
"Phillip Island has a great charisma. It's a track that you never forget," Rossi says, expressing his hope that the tradition continues.
However, with the current contract up for renewal, the future of MotoGP at Phillip Island is uncertain. Will Australia's MotoGP race move to a new location, or will it be lost altogether?
