A Growing Concern: Workplace Safety in North Carolina's Factories and Warehouses
In a state known for its thriving logistics and advanced manufacturing sectors, a new and alarming trend has emerged. North Carolina's Labor Department is taking action to address a rise in struck-by injuries and fatalities, with a focus on the very places that drive the state's economy. But here's where it gets controversial: the leading cause of workplace deaths is now being struck by tools, vehicles, and other hazards.
State Labor Commissioner Luke Farley has launched an initiative to tackle this issue head-on. He aims to educate business leaders, provide guidance on compliance, and consult on risk reduction strategies. Farley's plan is to first raise awareness and then take a firm stance, with inspectors ready to enforce safety regulations and issue penalties.
"We want to ensure that every worker returns home safely at the end of their shift. These incidents are preventable, and we must act now," Farley emphasized.
One company taking proactive measures is ABB, an electronic component manufacturer. They've invested significantly in improving their warehouse operations, showcasing how safety and efficiency can go hand in hand. By redesigning their warehouse layout and implementing new technology, ABB has not only doubled their storage capacity but also reduced the risk of accidents. Magnets under the floor guide forklifts, preventing collisions and potential disasters.
And this is the part most people miss: North Carolina's warehouse and manufacturing boom has brought with it a unique set of safety challenges. While overall workplace fatalities have decreased, the number of deaths from struck-by incidents has spiked. These accidents now account for nearly half of all workplace fatalities in the state, a statistic that cannot be ignored.
In the past two years alone, the number of deaths has increased by nearly 50%, with 25 fatalities recorded in 2025.
"These numbers are a stark reminder of the importance of our initiative. We cannot afford to lose more lives to preventable accidents," Farley said.
As North Carolina continues to thrive economically, it's crucial to ensure that the state's workers are protected. Farley's initiative aims to strike a balance between economic growth and worker safety.
