By 2017, he was promoted to defensive coordinator, a role he held for five impressive seasons. Under his leadership, Wisconsin's defense consistently ranked among the nation's elite, finishing in the top 5 in total defense and the top 10 in scoring defense on four occasions.
Leonhard's success at Wisconsin caught the attention of the NFL, and he joined the Denver Broncos in 2024 as the defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator. His impact was immediate, as the Broncos' defense soared to new heights. In just two seasons, Denver's defense ranked third in yards allowed per game, EPA per pass attempt, and passing touchdowns allowed, and second in yards allowed per pass attempt. They also boasted one of the league's best third-down defenses, allowing a conversion rate of just 35.5%.
Now, Leonhard is coming full circle, returning to Buffalo as the defensive coordinator. He joins offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers on the Bills' coaching staff.
